چکیده مقاله:

Background: This study was conducted to compare the cord blood lipid profile in term small for gestation (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies as determination of cord blood lipid profile is useful screening tool for early detection of babies at higher risk as atherosclerosis has its genesis in childhood. Methods: Study Design: Hospital based cross sectional study. Setting: neonatal unit of tertiary care hospital. Subjects: 200 full term babies born at SGRDIMSR during study period out of which 100 were AGA and 100 were SGA babies. Mean cord cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, VLDL was measured in both the groups. Results: Mean cord blood cholesterol was 72.29± 21.13 mg/dL, triglycerides 67.18± 20.36 mg/dL, HDL 28.51± 5.68 mg/dL, LDL 34.94± 16.45 mg/dL, VLDL 13.43± 04.10 mg/dl in 100 AGA babies. In 100 SGA babies, mean total cholesterol was 100.85± 26.82 mg/dl, triglycerides 82±22.58 mg/dL, HDL 27.70± 7.79 mg/dL, LDL 44.93± 7.663 mg/dL, VLDL 16.40± 4.479 mg/dL. Conclusion: Lipid profile values except HDL were significantly higher in SGA compared to AGA neonates (p

Comparisons of mortality and pre-discharge respiratory morbidities in small for gestational age and appropriate-for gestational age premature infants - An Indian Experience

Background: There is an assumption that fetus with restricted growth with an inappropriate intrauterine environment lies under stress. Although small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants have higher mortality, difference in the outcome of SGA and appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) infants regarding respiratory morbidity is controversial. It seems that respiratory morbidities in SGA neonates is ...

Small-for-gestational-age versus appropriate-for-gestational-age: Comparison of cord blood lipid profile & insulin levels in term newborns (SAGA-ACT study)

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The genesis of atherosclerotic lesions, a major cardiovascular risk factor starts in the early stage of life. If the premature development of cardiovascular risk factors can be anticipated during childhood, cardiovascular events can be prevented effectively by taking appropriate measures. This study was carried out to assess the role of in utero malnutrition in cardiovas...

Omphalitis in term and preterm appropriate for gestational age and small for gestational age infants.

To determine whether there is a difference on the historical and clinical characteristics of omphalitis among term and preterm appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and small for gestational age (SGA) infants, we prospectively investigated 85 newborns with bacteriologically proved omphalitis. Study groups were based on gestational age and being SGA. Preterm AGA infants had significantly lower m...

Evaluation of cord blood irisin levels in term newborns with small gestational age and appropriate gestational age

BACKGROUND Most recently, a novel myokine, named irisin, was identified in human that expressed by skeletal muscle after exercise. Irisin increases energy expenditure by turning white adipose tissue into brown adipose tissue. Thus improves carbohydrate homeostasis in humans. Irisin is considered as a potential biomarker for obesity and metabolic syndrome. In recent years, numerous studies have ...
